PBA Shark Pattern: How to Play It

Length, breakpoint and ball advice for the Shark sport pattern.

Quick Facts

Rule of 31 breakpointBoard 17 (48 minus 31)

Sources: FloBowling, "Pattern Breakdown: Jonesboro Features Shark, Viper Patterns" (2020 PBA Jonesboro Open); length cross-checked against the PBA Experience pattern list on bowl.com. Oil specs can change from year to year and event to event, so always read the sheet posted for your tournament.

Where the Shark Pattern Shows Up

Shark is the long animal pattern. FloBowling's breakdown of the 2020 PBA Jonesboro Open says it tops out at 48 feet, and the PBA Experience list on bowl.com also lists Shark at 48 feet. I could not verify a total oil volume or ratio from a published sheet, so I am not printing one. Ask your tournament director for the posted sheet.

How the Shark Pattern Plays

That breakdown expects strong covers, cores and low grit surfaces to keep traction on the long oil, with slower ball speeds to counter high rev rates.

Line Advice

Rule of 31 puts the breakpoint around board 17 (48 minus 31). The article says to keep angles tight and inside with no deep, angular looks, and that many players ended up between the 15 and 20 boards.

Ball and Surface Advice

Think traction first. A strong, low grit surface and a speed you can repeat will usually beat a big swing move. Get in touch if you want a ball and surface plan for a specific event.
